Irene Klein erhielt mit neun Jahren ihren ersten Gambenunterricht und sammelte schon früh Erfahrungen im Solo- und Consortspiel. Sie studierte an der Schola Cantorum Basiliensis bei Paolo Pandolfo und in Mailand an der Civica Scuola di Musica bei Roberto Gini. 1997 wurde sie im 1.Internationalen Bach-Abel-Wettbewerb für Viola da Gamba in Köthen/Anhalt zweite Preisträgerin, 1999 erhielt sie im Concours Musica Antiqua in Brugge/Belgien eine „Honourable Mention“ und einen Förderpreis.
Mit ihrem Gambenduo Musicke&Mirth mit Jane Achtman gewann sie mehrere hochdotierte Preise in internationalen Ensemblewettbewerben, und ihre CDs wurden weltweit gelobt.
Sie arbeitet u.a. zusammen mit Hans-Georg Kramer, Marais Consort Michael Form, Les Flamboyants; Maria Jonas, Randall Cook, Evelyn Tubb und Anthony Rooley. Namhafte Dirigenten wie Michael Hofstetter und René Jacobs schätzen ihre Mitarbeit als Gambistin und Lironespielerin in Konzert-, Opern- und Aufnahmeprojekten.
1999–2001 unterrichtete sie an der Týnská Škola in Prag, seit 2004 ist sie Dozentin für Viola da Gamba an der Leipziger Hochschule für Musik und Theater „Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy“.

Irene Klein was introduced to early music at a young age, receiving her first lessons on the viol when she was nine. After completing her studies with Paolo Pandolfo at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis in Switzerland with a diploma she rounded off her studies with Roberto Gini at the Civica Scuola di Musica di Milano.
She has been successful as a soloist, winning the second highest prize awarded at the “First International Bach-Abel Competition for the Viol” in Cöthen/Anhalt, Germany in 1997, and an “Honorable Mention” at the “Concours Musica Antiqua” in Bruges/Belgium in 1999.
She is a member of the ensembles Les Flamboyants (Basel), Collegium 1704 (Prague), Bell’Arte Salzburg and the Lautten Compagney (Berlin) and her active concert career has led her to travel throughout Europe.
Renowned directors and musicians, such as Anthony Rooley, Ketil Haugsand, Michael Hofstetter, and René Jacobs appreciate her considerable abilities on the viol and the lirone.
From 1999 to 2001, she taught viol at the Týnská Škola in Prague. Since 2004 she has been teaching at the Leipzig Hochschule für Musik und Theater “Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy”.
