Telemann’s Teatime
„…so hat der Spieler Lust, du hast Vergnügen dran…“
über 3.600 Werke von Telemann können heute nachgewiesen werden. Seine Instrumentalkompositionen sind dabei das Vielfältigste in Form, Besetzung und Stilistik, was in der ersten Hälfte des 18. Jahrhunderts in Europa überhaupt anzutreffen war. Mehr als zwanzig verschiedene Instrumente wurden von ihm in verschiedenen Konstellationen verwendet, wobei ihm immer eine dem Instrument angemessene und typische Schreibweise wichtig war.
So finden wir bei ihm auch unsere – eine sonst sehr seltene – Besetzung: Eine Traversflöte, zwei Gamben und ein Cembalo. Drei Charaktere, verteilt auf vier Persönlichkeiten, halten galante Konversation – getreu ihrem Meister, der stets Unterricht mit Unterhaltung, Vielfalt mit Solidität zu verbinden suchte. Die Ausführenden und ihre Zuhörer standen für Telemann im Mittelpunkt, eine „Kunst für die Kunst“ war ihm fremd.

Georg Philipp Telemann (1681-1767) was an extremely prolific composer, we know of 3600 compositions to date. He occupies a special postion in the 18th century musical arena.Telemann excelled in instrumental composition, experimenting with style, combinations of instruments and musical form and leaving us one the most varied legacies possible. He composed for over twenty different instruments, taking great pains to write in a style suited to each instrument and exploring its unique possibilities.
Two compositions by Telemann for the unusual combination of transverse flute, two viols and harpsichord have survived. Three instruments and four personalities engage in an hour of galant musical conversation. The compositions are perfect examples of Telemann’s endeavour to combine art with pleasure and exacting compositional rules with entertainment. In our program these two pieces are complemented by two compositions by Johann Melchior Molter und Johann Jacob Brand for the same combination of instruments. The program is rounded off by viols duos and a flute solo by Telemann further demonstrating his rare talent to recognize an instrument’s special qualities and show them off to perfection.
